Outdoor Living Space Design: Tips from a Skilled Interior Designer
I frequently am asked to create living spaces that embrace the outdoors as an interior designer in Sarasota, Florida. The weather in Sarasota is pleasant most of the year, there are few insects to worry about, and you can spend a lot of time outside or indoors. In either case, there are numerous ways to luxuriate in comfort and style while appreciating nature's offerings.
A common architectural element known as a "loggia" is one way we enjoy using the outdoors. This is frequently a terrace with a roof, occasionally a standalone pavilion, and occasionally a component of a house. We frequently outfit them with elegant teak-framed furniture (from sustainable forests, of course). We adore the way this quickly takes on a lovely silvery patina. We cover them with the newest indoor/outdoor materials and add large, plush cushions on top of them. These are made of polyesters, which are now being designed to feel and look more like cotton while yet being water- and mildew-resistant. They also dry quickly. They can be found in vibrant weaves and amazing prints in tropically colorful or subdued tones for modest and calm homes.
We use many of these areas as outdoor living rooms, which is exactly what they are. When installing stone floors indoors, we prefer to utilize the same material outside to connect the indoors and the outside. This creates a wonderful sense of connectedness and openness. With a honed or tumbled finish that gives them a more informal and rustic appearance, these floors are made of stone or tile. They provide an excellent reprieve from the summer heat when worn barefoot because they are cool and simple to walk on.
The absence of walls is complete. The entire purpose is to enjoy the view of the sky, sea, and sun. A home facing the Gulf that we recently finished has a wall that is also the home's wall, with large openings leading to the Loggia and the water beyond. When the owners aren't home, security and storm protection is provided by the ability to close and seal three of the loggia's sides with a coiling closure. When the house is open, the closures quietly retract into the ceiling. Except for the furniture on the loggia, an extension of the living room, there is no separation between the indoors and outdoors when the shutters are up. From indoors to outside, one transition with ease. Another method of "dressing up" a terrace is with outdoor drapes. When the afternoon sun is at its brightest, the drapes can be closed; after the light softens and welcomes us back, they can be opened. To maintain a clear and broad view, simple tie-backs can hold the curtains at the corners of the room.
We try to transform these areas into outdoor rooms. We frequently install mirrors where there are wall surfaces to reflect the view, add more light inside, and provide a classy ornamental finish for the walls. We also include additional furniture, such as lamps with sturdy ceramic bases that are placed close to walls to protect them from the wind and rain. Another lovely element is hurricane lamps on tables that offer the romantic glow of candlelight at dusk. Surface-mounted ceiling fixtures or striking, weather-resistant wall sconces are frequently used when additional decorative lighting is required. Unless they can be secured against strong gusts, hanging fixtures can be an issue. However, ceiling fans are frequently made with short or inflexible stems so that they can serve as both a functional and ornamental element.
The living space can be expanded in addition to loggias by terraces and decks. In the morning and evening, terraces off of guestrooms are great spaces for peaceful reflection and to recover and rejuvenate in a private outdoor setting. They feel more like living rooms than just a deck with a hard chair, thanks to comfy indoor/outdoor furnishings. Wet bars, outdoor showers, and fireplaces or fire pits
are typical amenities. These factors all contribute to extending the amount of time we may spend outside or beneath the stars.
