As an interior designer who has worked for a long time, what would be three big changes in how people like their homes?

The change from stain grade cabinets to paint grade cabinets is the first thing that comes to mind. There are white kitchens again! The red and orange tones that were popular a decade ago are becoming less popular with clients. Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) is being used in more and more homes. This is a big change in flooring. LVP has come a long way and is now very long-lasting, easy to clean, and looks like real wood. Third, quartz countertops are becoming more popular and are now the norm. I no longer spec granite very often. Quartz is much easier to keep clean than granite, and the colours and patterns available now look like everything from natural marble to exotic granites. What are some ideas and thoughts about the future? Any new trends that might happen in 2018–19 and after that?

Hand-scraped, wide-plank barn board flooring and furniture with a lot of wear and tear are both popular right now. More traditional styles are also starting to make a comeback in design. Warm metal tones and details are popular right now, as are rich jewel tones (yes, brass is back, but in a new way!).

What are some of the hardest parts of helping customers make their dream renovations come true?

A lot of clients are afraid to go with their gut when it comes to style. Often, their heart and brain disagree about what they want. Most of the time, they are trying to force themselves to use different colours or styles than they did in their last home, which is sometimes way out of their comfort zone. I always tell my clients to trust their instincts. Their home is their safe place, so they need to feel comfortable, calm, and happy when they are there.

Are there certain kinds of home improvements that tend to add the most value to a home's selling price?

People always spend the most time in their kitchens, bathrooms, and basements, so adding to these areas will raise the value of your home. How does someone get ideas or inspiration to help them decide what to do when they want to make changes to their home?

I often tell clients to send me pictures of homes, rooms, styles, and products they find on sites about home decor. Clients don't always know what their style is, but if they show me pictures of things they like, I can usually get a better idea of what they want.
