How make-up came to be
If you look at glossy magazine ads with beautiful women talking about "the latest cosmetics news," "the best mineral foundation," or "the most glamorous eye makeup," you might also think that makeup is a new thing. But the truth is that people have used makeup since the beginning of time. People have always cared about how they look, no matter how many years, countries, or cultures have come and gone. Of course, the makeup they used has changed over time, from dangerous things like arsenic and iodine to today's safe, natural mineral makeup, which is made from minerals that already exist in the earth. So many believe
Even in the
Bible, people used makeup to make themselves look better. We know this because
the Bible talks about make-up more than once. In King 9:30, it says, "When
Jehu went to Jazreel, Jezebel heard about it, so she painted her eyes and put
jewellery on her head." Jeremiah 4:30 says, "What do you mean when you
say you wear scarlet, decorate yourself with gold jewelry, and paint your eyes
to make them look bigger?"
Archaeologists
have found evidence of eye makeup in tombs from 3,500 BC in Egypt. Ancient
Egyptians used kohl to make their eyes stand out. It was made from copper,
lead, soot, almonds that had been burned, and other things. By the first
century A.D., people could also use powders to make their skin lighter and red
ochre to put on their cheeks as rouge. Cosmetae were slave women in ancient
Rome who were in charge of making cosmetics.
Interesting point
It's
interesting to note that, just like in modern times, there was a makeup legend
in China. It was said that Princess Shouyang, the daughter of Emperor Wu of Liu
Song, was resting near some plum trees by the palace when a plum blossom fell
on her face and left a beautiful mark on her forehead. It was said that the
beautiful mark so impressed the court ladies that they started to put a
delicate plum blossom design on their foreheads. Meihua zhuang, which means
"plum blossom makeup," was a popular style of makeup during the
Southern Dynasties (420–589), the Tang Dynasty (618–907), and the Song Dynasty
(960–1279). (960 - 1279).
During the
Middle Ages, the rise of Christianity, which didn't like cosmetics, made makeup
less popular. Still, some women, especially in the upper class, continued to
use it. Being pale was a sign of wealth and status because people in lower
classes had to work outside all day in the sun, while people in higher classes
could relax inside. So, to get that fashionable pale look, women used white
lead, soluble paints, white powder, or even bled themselves. Queen Elizabeth
1's pale look, called "The Mask of Youth," was made with white lead.
During the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century, makeup was once
again very popular among the wealthy. The most popular look was still being
very pale. Many of the things that were used to make makeup back then were
dangerous and caused serious health problems. During that time, white lead, mercury,
and sulfur were used to make things. Some women put poisonous belladonna drops
in their eyes to make them shine, or they tried to get white skin by swallowing
chalk or iodine. These dangerous makeup ingredients sometimes caused skin
ulcers, poisonings, and even blindness. Safe, natural cosmetics, like the
popular mineral makeup of today, didn't start to hit the market until the last
few years.
During the
middle to late 19th century, the Victorian era, primness and modesty were
valued, and women who wore a lot of makeup were called whorish. This did not
mean that makeup went away, though. Instead, a "natural" look with
less makeup became popular. At the time, lipstick and blush were seen as
scandalous, so beauty books told girls to bite their lips and pinch their cheeks
before walking into a room.
The 20th
century was really the start of the modern era of safer cosmetics sold in
stores. Doctors then started working with makeup companies to make safer
products that women could buy in stores. In the 1920s and 1930s, lipstick, the
first liquid nail polish, powder compacts, blushes, and foundation all became
popular. Nearly all women wore makeup by that time. Modern companies that make
cosmetics that we still use today started to pop up. In 1886, Avon started out
as a perfume company, but it quickly expanded into cosmetics. Revlon began in
1930, and Maybelline in 1915.
Mineral
makeup is becoming more and more popular, which makes makeup even safer than it
used to be. The base of mineral makeup is natural, safe minerals that have been
ground into a powder. Sephora, BareMinerals, PurMinerals, and other well-known
companies all make mineral makeup. Mineral makeup is made up of titanium
dioxide, bixmuth oxychloride, kaolin clay, zinc oxide, and serecite as its main
ingredients.
Each mineral
in mineral makeup has its own way of making you look better. Zinc oxide calms
inflammation, and both it and titanium dioxide protect skin from the sun's
harmful effects. Kaolin clay cleans the skin, makes the pores smaller, and
helps get rid of pimples without taking away the skin's natural oils. Serecite
bounces light back, which makes wrinkles look less deep. Mica spheres and silk
powders give the makeup a silky feel, which is why mineral makeup is the best
foundation.
Mineral
makeup, unlike the dangerous chemicals that used to be in cosmetics, lets women
improve their looks in a safe and natural way. Because of this, mineral makeup
is becoming more and more popular and is the newest thing in makeup. If you
