Dennis got bored working in the high tech industry. She needed to do something
different. So, about 12 years ago, she changed careers by taking classes at one
of California's makeup schools from a professor. Dennis was a little scared by
it. "I used to work in a structured place, but now I don't know when my
next job will be," she says. But she went to school and got her
certificates so she could start a career in makeup.
You can
learn about a lot of different things in makeup schools. Dennis took classes in
TV, film, and print, where he learned about makeup for different cultures and
time periods, art history, and how to use an airbrush. Dennis works on photo
shoots and commercials now that she knows how to do makeup. She says,
"Most of the work I do is simple beauty makeup." She has also done
the makeup for VAL KILMER and MONTEL WILLIAMS, as well as for Teen Vogue and
People magazine covers.
And that's
just when she's not working. Dennis is also the beauty editor for LA'G
Magazine, where he writes about products, reviews them, and works on all things
related to beauty. She says, "It takes up a lot of time." "But I
like to see how my work turns out in the end."

Cincinnati, Ohio, where she learned about skin care, hair care, and, most
importantly for her, makeup. Evans says that not all beauty schools teach you
how to put on makeup. Because of this, she decided to try to make a living as a
makeup artist. She learned, among other things, how to apply makeup differently
for day and night.
Evans works
at the Godiva Salon in Atlanta and has done work for the Food Channel and local
news anchors. She thinks that people who want to get into the field "need
to be creative and energetic," and that the best thing about makeup is
that "you can always wash it off." So don't be afraid to try out
makeup schools. Evans says, "You don't have to always follow the
rules."
How to Make a Living as a Makeup
Artist
Depending on the rules in each state, the process of becoming a professional makeup artist can be very different. As was already said, you need an esthetician license in some states and a full cosmetology license in others. Getting a full cosmetology license costs more and takes longer.
If you want to be a makeup artist in a state that doesn't require a license or special training, you have more freedom to choose how to get there. Follow the steps below to get started on your way to becoming a professional makeup artist.
1. Find out
if your state requires you to go to an esthetics or cosmetology school or if
you can go to a separate school that focuses on makeup. You can check this
information with the cosmetology board, health department, or whoever is in
charge in your state.
2. Look into
and compare different schools for makeup artistry. Get as much information as
you can about the courses, hours of training, and topics covered. If you want
to be a full-time makeup artist but are thinking about enrolling in a more
general cosmetology or esthetics program, make sure that the program meets the
state's requirements for a cosmetology or esthetics license and that the makeup
training is a big part of the program.
3. Sign up,
get the number of training hours required by your state, and finish the
program.
